How to Succeed the Job Search using
LinkedIn, Student Tips:
7 Steps to Success:
1)
LinkedIn
is not meant to be used like Facebook : For all those who just connect to
friends on LinkedIn, please use it wisely.
2) Create an All Star Profile on LinkedIn:It's often a case that a graduate student may have less/no
experience.
The first thing to do is to be confident that you will get a job.
Anything that you may do might be valuable and first believe in yourself. (Even
a fact that you know cooking being an IT professional might help! So put it all
in.)
3) Don't Hesitate: Connect with anyone who
you think seems valuable.
Note: LinkedIn doesn't allow you to do more than 3000
unknown connections. You get restricted two times and then get blocked. Easier
way to do this is to drop in a short note to ignore your request if they feel
it's inappropriate.
4)
Use the
LinkedIn filters wisely: Filter out the contacts you need to connect to by
searching based on parameters like location or industry that are specific to
you.
Don’t be afraid to connect to CEO’s. After all, these are
people who have passed the stage of being a student and know what it means to
get a job.
5)
Once you
get your contacts: Build an initial interesting conversation about the
company that the connection works for or talk something general.
On getting a reply drop in a small cover letter describing
your experience and try to ask if there an opening. A better thing to do would
be to go to the company website and apply for jobs prior to contacting. Either
ways it works!
6)
Apply for
Jobs posted within LinkedIn: The trick here is not to just apply.
Connect with the person who posted the job and you’re most
likely to get a call if you’re a good fit.
7)
Do the right things at the right place: Actively participate in group
discussions either specific to a company or specific to a group which interests
you. Try to connect to people over there and who knows someone might hire you.
